Cape beachgoers not scared off by great white sharks

Posted: Updated:
ORLEANS, Mass. (WHDH) - Beach-goers and fishermen on Cape Cod and the Islands have had several close encounters with great white sharks.

Sean Cavanaugh was fishing with friends about 100 miles off Nantucket when the group witnessed quite a sight.

“It looked like a small whale and it busted right in the water, right around where a marlin was. When we went back and played the footage, you can see the shark in the air like ‘Air Jaws’ on the Discovery Channel,” Cavanaugh said.

Crew members said the shark was probably trying to grab the marlin, but missed it and went flying into the air.

The video and several other sightings around Cape Cod aren’t scaring beach-goers away though.

On Saturday, the Atlantic White Shark Conservatory confirmed the first sighting of the year about a quarter-mile off Nauset Beach in Orleans.

The female shark was tagged and named Ping. She is estimated to be 12-14 feet long.

Also last week, a tuna fishing crew said a great white shark swam right up to their boat about 15 miles off shore.

It's unclear if these are the same sharks or just a few of many different sharks living in the waters near Cape Cod.

“That's something the scientists are doing -- a population study is starting this year and that will be a multi-year study,” President of the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, Cynthia Wigren said.
