Buzz Lightyear helps catch Atlanta thieves

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA (NBC) - One of Buzz Lightyear's more famous catchphrases says that he's "to the rescue," but in Atlanta, the fictional Disney character actually did help out.

A recycling group used a Buzz Lightyear toy to track down a suspect wanted for stealing donations.

It didn't take much for Tim Peck of Mid-Atlantic Clothing to go from mild-mannered recycling manager to full-fledged crime stopper.

"We noticed our donations were going down--35 percent--tens of thousands of dollars," Peck said.

With the bins sitting unattended he knew it was the work of thieves and he needed a crime stopping partner.

"You can see, Buzz has a little backpack. We just put the GPS inside here and velcro'd it shut and I'd place it inside in a decoy bag."

One night the alert went off and Peck called local police. Buzz had led them straight to the home of Everette Barton. Georgia police made the arrest and Peck got the donations back.
