Local teen performs with the Piano Man at Fenway Park

When Billy Joel began to play the piano solo for his hit "New York State of Mind," fans at Fenway had little idea what they were about to witness.

Thirteen-year-old Emma Stanganelli of Methuen belted out the lyrics to a New England version of the song, called "Boston State of Mind" instead.

"I was definitely nervous. I was wicked scared but I was really excited, too. I was wicked happy and honored,” she said.

Emma was also wicked good. The 13-year-old brought the house down Thursday with a little help from a legend.

"He did give me advice about how to hold my mic. He told me that I did a good job and it was pretty cool,” Emma said.

Last year, a friend of Emma’s penned the Boston-centric version of the song after the Marathon Bombing to help raise money for the One Fund.

Billy Joel's people saw the video on YouTube and recruited the 13-year-old to join him at Fenway.

Her mother was with her backstage while her dad and sister were in the crowd.

"I was completely a mess, my stomach was in knots,” said Emma’s dad, Todd Stanganelli.

Despite her new-found fame, Emma's no big-timer. She was back on stage with her friends at the Palace Theater in Manchester, New Hampshire the day after the show, doing what she loves.

She said she was not going to let the experience of a lifetime go to her head.

“I'm just going to kind of live low and be humble about it,” she said.

Emma said she didn’t know she was going to be singing at the show until Sunday, but she was able to pull it off with four days planning.
