Former BU professor to get double arm transplant

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (WHDH) - A former Boston University professor has been approved for an experimental procedure, doctors announced Thursday.

Will Lautzenheiser will receive a bilateral arm transplant at Brigham and Women's Hospital.

The 39-year-old lost his legs and his arms in 2011 following a life threatening streptococcal infection.

"I didn't think limb transplant was an option for me. I hadn't heard of it before my amputations," Lautzenheiser said. "I hope that the future will be a good one on account of what they're bringing."

Brigham and Women's is now working with the New England Organ Bank to search for an appropriate donor.
