BOSTON (WHDH) -
A Boston lawyer has filed a lawsuit against the ride-sharing service Uber Technologies Inc., stating that it exploits its drivers.
The suit filed Thursday in Suffolk Superior Court by attorney Shannon Liss-Riordan says Uber Technologies Inc. misclassifies its drivers as independent contractors, making them pay for their own gas, insurance and other expnses, and to avoid paying them the same as employees with benefits.
The company is also accused of not giving full proceeds from tips to the drivers.
An Uber spokesman said in a statement that "Uber will vigorously defend the rights of drivers to build their own small business, and riders to enjoy competition and choice."
Taxi drivers recently protested outside Uber's office in Boston.
Unlike cabs, Uber is not regulated by the city which means its cars don't have to be inspected twice a year. Cab company owners said that makes the service unsafe. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
