Police identify man suspected of hiding camera in Seekonk gym

SEEKONK, Mass. (WHDH) - Police said they were able to identify a man who hid a video camera in a women's locker room because he captured himself on video while setting up the camera.

Police said the secret camera was discovered at a Planet Fitness on Route 44 around 2:00 a.m. Wednesday. The camera had been recording for more than 21 minutes when it was found. The gym is open 24 hours a day.

Officers who examined the video said it showed the man setting up the hidden camera in the Seekonk club. Gym employees identified the man as a club member.

No arrests have been made and police are still investigating.

“It's pretty violating and disgusting that someone would actually do that," said Lindsay Carreiro.

“You come to a gym thinking you're in sort of a safe environment and then you find out there are people watching you in the changing room, which is a complete violation of anyone's privacy,” gym member Jessica Alves said.

"It's very rude. You come here to workout. You don't expect things like that, especially in a public place like this. It's very, very, very sad," said one gym member.

In a statement, a corporate spokeswoman for Planet Fitness wrote,  “At Planet Fitness, the privacy of our members is extremely important to us. We are aware of the alleged incident that took place at the Planet Fitness in Seekonk, MA. The franchise owner is working closely with the local authorities to investigate this matter.”

Police said that the camera wasn't streaming to the Internet so whoever put the camera in the locker room would have had to come back and collect the media.

This incident has raised doubts with gym members who liked this Planet Fitness location.

"It is very well maintained, but I guess it's not that well maintained seeing as though there are cameras in the bathroom or the woman's locker room," said one gym member.

“It makes me a little skeptical to use the facilities. I would come to the gym, but I don't think I'd be going into the locker room,” Denise Frageorgia said.

“I'm pretty shocked. I never change here thankfully but it makes me maybe reconsider joining another gym,” Carreiro added.
