BOSTON (WHDH) - It may have been a loss for the USA Men’s National Team against Germany but with the home team still advancing to the round of 16 World Cup fever is sweeping Boston.

Fans gathered on City Hall Plaza with Boston Mayor Marty Walsh to cheer on the USMNT Thursday afternoon.

“I think this is so cool I’m so excited for this game. I’m so excited,” Aiden Perry, a goalie for the Lawrence Academy soccer team, said.

One of the heroes from the Boston Marathon bombing was even in attendance.

"We all are Boston strong, United States strong,” Carlos Arredondo said.

There were even a few Germany fans in the crowd, they said they were getting heckled but knew it was all in good fun.

Many fans of the United States team watched nervously as the red, white and blue failed to score a single goal.

“We were getting dominated but it was fun to be here watching with everybody and they played hard,” soccer fan Alice Binns said.

The US had two good scoring chances and the crowed exploded with cheers when they got close.

In the end a one-goal loss was enough to but USA into the next round.

“That's the way soccer is. It’s all about the points. Everybody expected the US to lose all their games and come in 4th place but they’re going into the round of 16,” soccer fan Joel Rodriguez said.

Everybody in attendance agreed on one thing, if the USMNT is going to succeed they will need more opportunities on offense.

"Honestly, I think it's great. The more people we can get behind the sport and just behind the team in general it really is going to make a big difference I feel,” Colin Currie said.
