Boy's wheelchair taken from outside Methuen home

METHUEN, Mass. (WHDH) - A Methuen family said someone took their son's customized wheelchair after his mom left it outside.

Willie Kemau, 10, had a stroke when he was a baby and the wheelchair is his means of transportation.

Margaret Kemau said she left it unattended for just a few minutes and when she came back it was gone.

"His wheelchair is his lifeline. He depends on it,” Margaret Kemau, Willie’s mom, said. "I was so angry because I couldn't understand why somebody would take it."

Kemau said around 6:30 Tuesday morning she carried the wheelchair down the stairs and set it on the sidewalk. The two were going to walk to the park.

She says she went inside for about 15 minutes to get Willie ready and when she came back outside it was gone.

Methuen Police say they're investigating but so far the chair has not turned up. It's valued at $6,000.

“I don't understand why somebody would just take a child's chair,” Margaret said.

The calendar could provide a possible answer to that question.

Tuesday was trash day on their street. Since it was sitting at the curb, there is a chance someone could have mistaken it as trash and hauled it off.

“It is a new chair and he needs it desperately,” Margaret said.

Willie's full name is printed on the front of the chair. In the back is a suction machine that he needs.

"I just want to make an appeal to anybody who may have taken it, probably they took it by mistake, to just bring it back,” Margaret said.

Margaret said she doesn't have the money to replace the chair. She is hoping someone knows where it is and comes forward.
