LYNN, Mass. (WHDH) -
A Lynn man was arraigned on two counts of child endangerment in Lynn District Court Wednesday, in connection with the bath tub scalding of two toddlers last week.
Charles Robinson Collins, 21, cried as he faced a judge.
His father said his son was getting the children ready for daycare on June 18, when he put them in the bathtub and left them alone to go to the bathroom in his own apartment across the hall.
“There was no intent to commit a crime here. This was a horrible, horrible mistake. As you can see, he is very emotional today. These children are like family to him,” defense attorney Lance Sobelman said.
The two young brothers, 18-months-old and 3-years-old, were severely burned by hot water in the bathtub.
Prosecutors said the 18-month-old had second-degree burns to 50 percent of his back and the 3-year-old had second-degree burns to 80 percent of his upper body.
On Wednesday, the older boy had his breathing tube removed.
Family members said the boys will likely be in the hospital for another month.
