Two men help drowning kayaker off Nahant

REVERE, Mass. (WHDH) - When Teddy Slavin put his kayak in the water it was calm sailing, but halfway to Nahant he ran into a problem.

Slavin’s kayak overturned and he was stuck with no one around.

“All of a sudden the boat went from underneath me,” he said.

Without a life jacket, the disabled Navy veteran was stuck trying to swim to shore.

“The last thing I remember is the big guy. He grabbed me. He grabbed me by my waist,” Slavin said.

The big guy, Barry Lauzon, was visiting his girlfriend at the Nahant apartment complex where she lived, when he heard Slavin's screams for help.

“I ran to beach and there was a guy about 200 yards out just bobbing. I asked if he was alright. He yelled ‘help, help,’” Lauzon said.

Several other people heard the cries for help and called 911.

“We were yelling at him to stop swimming, we're coming, just tread water, don’t fight it. He was caught in a current and he was trying to swim panicked,” Lauzon said.

Lauzon swam out and a teenager met them in the ocean with a life preserver from the complex’s pool.

“They’re my angels, not my heroes, my angels,” Slavin said.

Lauzon said he isn’t a regular swimmer, he just reacted. He said he’s thankful his mom got him swim lessons when he was a toddler.
