'Black Mass' parade filmed in Lynn

Posted: Updated:
LYNN, Mass. (WHDH) - The 1982 St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Southie is probably just a memory for some, but thanks to a little movie magic that day was recreated Monday.

Johnny Depp surprised the crowd in Lynn, looking like Whitey Bulger and marching in a parade for the movie "Black Mass".

“We saw Johnny Depp. He was in costume. He was awesome, waving to us, saying hello,” Ann Verge of Lynnfield said.

Depp wasn't the only star in town. Benedict Cumberbatch was leading the parade. He is playing Whitey's brother, former state senate president Billy Bulger.

Union Street in Lynn was transformed into South Boston, complete with a Broadway MBTA stop and many protest signs against school busing.

Despite all the hoopla, the biggest excitement for the crowd was getting a photo or a wave from Depp.

“Last summer was the Summer of Whitey 1. I went to the trial eight times, sat in, saw Mr. Bulger himself. Now it's summer of whitey 2.  I'm coming to the filming. We're going to hit up as many places as we can,” Katy Sheridan of Lowell said.

“Black Mass" will be filming in the area through July. It’s scheduled to hit theaters in October 2015.
