A local priest made history by becoming the first openly transgender priest to give a sermon at the National Cathedral on Sunday.

From the Canterbury Pulpit, Rev. Dr. Cameron Partride spoke about the gay, lesbian, and transgender communities.

"So often the worlds we live in have either failed to see us, have stared at us, or have sought to erase us," said Partridge, the Episcopal Chaplain at Boston University.

Partridge is the first ever openly transgender person to deliver this sermon. His message was acceptance, by the church and other institutions.

"I'm moved by how our decisions are calling us into a deeper awareness of the mystery of the human person," he said.

"A lot of really positive things have happened in the past year but we still have a long way to go," said Very Rev. Gary Hall, Dean of the National Cathedral.

Hall said this observance placed the National Cathedral exactly where its title implies it should be.

"To really send a strong message to the LBGT people that the church is with them, loves them, and supports them in their move for marriage and other forms of equality," Hall said.

In another first, Anglican Bishop Gene Robinson, an openly gay bishop, performed the Eucharist.

"It speaks loud and clear about how we are all children of God," Robinson said.

"This is like a huge moment. It would be like hearing Martin Luther King preach," said Emma Chattin, who attended the service.

One attendee who said inclusion of all kinds had been a sore spot in her relationship with the church, but that she was inspired anew.

"This is my first real Episcopal service in 40 something years. What an amazing Sunday," said Heather James.
