MANSFIELD, Mass. (WHDH) - MBTA Transit Police said three people were killed after an Amtrak train struck the vehicle they were inside of on the tracks in Mansfield just before midnight Monday. The crash caused the train to partially derail.

Authorities said there were two males and one female inside the vehicle.

Police said Train 132 was on its way to Boston from Washington when the collision occurred.

The train could have been traveling at speeds up to 120 miles-per-hour. Investigators are working to determine why the truck was on the tracks or how it gained access.

There were about 180 passengers on board the train, but none of them were hurt. They were stranded for about four hours, until they were loaded onto an MBTA train and transported to South Station.

The train's engineer was evaluated on scene for a possible head injury but was not taken to the hospital.

Passengers said they felt the jolt, then it felt like they went a mile or so before the train finally stopped.

"It was rocking back and forth for a while. It felt like it was going to derail. The engine did derail," said one passenger.

"I definitely felt it because I was listening to music and then I heard this big jolt and I jumped on my husband. I was like, 'oh my gosh,' and then all this gas and smoke was in, so then I got really scared," said another passenger.

The train had a broken axle. It sat on the tracks for more than 12 hours before it was removed.
