Men rescue five from capsized boat off Wash. coast

Posted: Updated:
ASTORIA, Ore. (NBC) - Two men stepped in to save five people after boaters in distress needed them off the coast of Washington State.

Officer Randy Vanderhoof and retired Sergeant Lonn Sweeney love to fish off the Oregon coast.

"After 30 some years of police work, I come down here to have fun and not see more tragedy," Sweeney said.

Friday morning started out fine and full of hope for hooking salmon but conditions changed so they approached.

"We spotted another pleasure craft, a guide boat with some folks on it and we swung by and said hey they're gong to close the bar," Sweeney said.

Just seconds later the boat, carrying a fishing guide and five others, capsized.

"We knew they needed help. One guy was yelling for help, another guy floating back," Vanderhoof said.

"Luckily these guys were wearing life vests and we were able to get them in one at at time," Sweeney said.

The Coast Guard responded, lowering crews into the water. Sweeney and Vanderhoof were able to help with the rescue of five. The other was found later tangled in fishing gear.
