Danvers house fire latest tragedy to befall homeowner

Posted: Updated:
DANVERS, Mass. (WHDH) -  A fast-moving fire destroyed a house in Danvers Tuesday that was more than 100 years old.

The people living in the home made it out safely, but the homeowner said he was heartbroken.

“I've owned it for 47 years. We bought it when we were very young,” Bill Nyland said.

Nyland said he planned on giving the house to his grandson, but that changed after his grandson was recently killed in a car crash.

"We had saved it for him and now he's gone and now the house is gone,” Nyland said. "It's like God picked a fight with me. How could you explain lose a grandson, lose a house”"

Nyland, who is battling cancer, said since his grandson died he had been looking into selling the home.

“Now I don't have that grandson, there’s no sense keeping it so I said, ‘well, we'll sell it, make life a little easier for my wife and I.’ And now this," he said.

It was unclear how the fire started but officials said they believed it started on the front porch.
