911 calls released from Greyhound bus hijacking

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (NBC) - A Greyhound bus heading down a Phoenix road was hijacked by a passenger, lost control and flew into a median at 70 miles an hour back in January.

The 911 calls have been released from the frightening incident.

Authorities say that Maquel Morris ran to the front of the bus, jumped on the dashboard and grabbed the wheel from the driver.

Cameras show the a passenger in the front trying to pull Morris away. The bus veered off the highway before hitting something. Passengers go flying and in total, 24 people were injured, seven with broken bones.

"A guy jumped me while i'm trying to drive the bus! And we went in there, we're in the median!" the bus driver said in a 911 call. "I don't know how many hurt, I've got 46 on board...I need help immediately!"

Police say Morris and his girlfriend took off running. Other drivers saw them running down Interstate 10.

"Somebody on the eastbound shoulder at the 86 mile marker either intoxicated or on drugs and trying to get into the eastbound traffic."

Morris was arrested a short time later. Lab tests showed meth and amphetamines in his blood. He told police someone on the bus with a gun was trying to kill him.

An officer wrote he noticed white powder around Morris's nose.

Days later Morris held a rambling press conference from jail.he was found incompetent to stand trial a few months later.

A judge decided that Morris should be kept locked up for treatment. He's due back in court in July for an update on his condition.
