79-year-old vet fights off would-be robber

Posted: Updated:
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (NBC) - A 79-year old veteran pulled up to a gas station and was suddenly forced to defend himself against a man with gun. What the robber didn't expect was that the elderly victim would put up a fight.

Marvin Lail was filling up his car Saturday morning, when a man jumped from behind the gas pump and tried attacking him.

"It happened so fast he immediately told me he wanted my pocketbook and my money," Lail said. "He said 'give it up old man. give it up old man.' I kept fighting and I got a little injury right there. Where he scratched me."

Lail says when he wouldn't give up his wallet, the attacker showed him a black handgun, but it didn't deter him from fighting back.

"You're going to have to kill me to get my money to get my billfold. I really truly thought I could take him. He was a little slow and I just naturally resisted him reaching into my pocket to get my billfold and there was a little bit of money in there too. He'd of had a good day," Lail said.

Eventually one of the 7-11 workers intervened and the thief took off.

Orange County Florida deputies believe he may have been targeted because of his age.

"They picked the wrong mark. This 79 year old is feisty and he got to keep his wallet," said Jane Watrel of the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

"I would like for him to get caught. and if he don't get caught my advice for him would be to quit that trade because he's going to kill somebody," Lail said.
