Man accused of hitting cat with baseball bat

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WHDH) -  A New Bedford man is accused of attacking his ex-girlfriend’s cat with a baseball bat.

Veterinarians say Smudge, the 4-year-old cat, lost an eye during the attack and is lucky to be alive.

“Why anybody would beat up an innocent little kitten, she’s little only 10 lbs, is beyond me,” Dr. Corinne Slaughter said.

This cat now wears a cast on one paw, and she is stitched up where her eye was removed during surgery. Police say she was hit hard in the head with a baseball bat.

Police say 55-year old Manual Erinna was on the phone with his ex-girlfriend when he found out a cat may have been scratching her granddaughter.

That’s when police say he walked to the building next door and started beating the cat with a baseball bat.

Neighbors say they believe he has a drinking problem but no matter what they say he shouldn't have hurt an animal.

The veterinarian is taking care of Smudge, even taking the cat home with her to heal before she is put up for adoption.
