NStar worker finds child alone inside Mattapan apartment

Posted: Updated:
MATTAPAN, Mass. (WHDH) - It was a regular morning for an NStar worker in Mattapan, but that changed when she knocked on an apartment door and a 4-year-old answered.

Mattie Bethel spoke with 7News and said the third floor apartment was sweltering when she went to do a routine meter check.

“I asked for his mother and he looked in his bedroom and we kept saying ‘hello, hello’ and knocked on the door. The place was a mess so we walked in and no one was there,” Bethel said.

The frightened child could be heard crying inside the ambulance before he was taken to the hospital to get checked out, but bethel said he looked fine.

“He was in clothes he looked good, he was playing, he was energetic. I asked him what he had for breakfast and he said candy,” Bethel said.

Neighbors were stunned to hear anyone would leave a young child home alone.

“It’s just really mind boggling, just to know that someone could to that do their kids no matter what the circumstances are,” Erica Barnes said.

Boston police detectives were called to the scene to photograph the apartment.

“I think it was plain place, we thought maybe she went to the store and she’d be right back, but the look of it and the smell of it we thought no way, we wouldn’t leave a kid like this,” Bethel said.

The Department of Children and Families is investigating the incident.
