New Bedford man charged with animal cruelty

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WHDH) - A New Bedford man is charged with animal cruelty for allegedly using an aluminum baseball bat to attack a cat.

Police say Manuel Erinna, 55, attacked the 4-year-old cat named Smudge on Saturday.

According to investigators, Errinna's ex-girlfriend claims the cat accidentally scratched her granddaughter. Officers say Errinna told the woman he would, "take care of the cat".

He then allegedly attacked the animal.

"Just think of what he might have done to his ex-girlfriend or the grandchild. If you're going to hit an innocent cat, what is the next step?" said Dr. Corinne Slaughter, a veterinarian.

Smudge survived but she now has a cat on one of her paws and she lost her right eye.

She will be put up for adoption once she recovers.
