Three men accused of stealing from Gardner church

Posted: Updated:
GARDNER, Mass. (WHDH) - A priest in Gardener has a lot of questions about what would cause three men to steal from his church.

Police say the men Jonathan Boudreau, Shawn Mason and Shane McCaffrey, were found in an abandoned cinema in Gardner with stolen robes and stolen books.

“Why? What do they want with robes? Only priests can use those,” Rev. Thomas Tokarz from St. Joseph’s of Gardner said.

Tokarz said the items were stolen Friday morning, windows were broken and doors were busted.

He noticed the items had been taken so he called the police and asked from some heavenly help.

“I asked the people to pray that we would get the articles back and I guess prayers were answered we got them back,” he said.

Boudreau’s grandfather said his grandson admitted to breaking into the old theatre but had nothing to do with the theft

“I'm disappointed he was involved but he came up, he was mad that I didn't bail him out. I said ‘this is what you do. You know right from wrong.’ He said ‘I agree that’s wrong,’” Claude Boudreau said.

The church is just happy everything is back where it belongs

“To forgive and forget well you can't forget, I suppose you can forgive,” Tokarz said.

The three men are charged with breaking into the theatre and having the stolen robes. Police say those charges could be upgraded.
