CHICO, Calif. (WHDH) - Last Monday, Jim McGill let his dog outside, but when he opened the door barefoot, he was bitten by a rattlesnake.

"Just a shock, just almost like it hit high voltage," he said.

It was an 18-inch long snake that was slithering underneath the doorstep and bit Jim on his left foot.

"Just bubbles all over my legs and my hands, and all over my body. It was a real shock," he said.

"I heard him scream and I went running over there," said Nancy, Jim's wife of 61 years.

At that point, she grabbed a broom and a box.

"I tipped it sideways, took the broom, swept it in there, and sealed it up and put it in the car. This wasn't something I thought out. It was just reaction," she said.

The McGills were not sure where the snake came from, but their home of 50 years is near a creek: a possible origin.

But now there's a new rule in the McGill household.

"Boots on all the time," said Jim.
