SOUTH MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A fishing trip off the coast of South Florida took an exciting turn for a father and son this weekend when, they said, they had a close encounter with a great white shark that they captured on video.

Homestead resident William Chinners said he and his father went out on the water on a small boat to fish for mahi-mahi on Saturday. He said they were about 20 miles off the coast of Biscayne National Park when they spotted the marine predator. "We looked down, and we saw nothing but gray," said Chinners.

"I did a little jolt, my dad did a jolt, and we looked back. I saw a big old tail fin," said Chinners, who immediately took out his cell phone to capture the terrifying sight on video.

Chinners admitted he was scared. "I felt like I was in 'Jaws,' definitely," he said, referring to Steven Spielberg's film adaptation of Peter Benchley's best-selling novel.

Based on its color and markings, Chinners said, he has no doubt that he came across a great white. He said the most frightening moment was when the shark rattled the boat. "Yeah, I think he bit it," Chinners is overheard saying in the cell phone video.

For about five minutes, Chinners said, the roughly 11-foot shark circled the 17-foot boat. "I'm still in shock. I'm still shaking," he said.

Chinners said, when he pulled the boat out of the water, he found scrapes and puncture marks on the lower part of the vessel. He said he feels "fairly confident" those were made by shark teeth.

Chinners believes the shark was attracted to his boat because of all the mahi-mahi he and his father had caught.
