HINGHAM, Mass. (WHDH) - Police are on high alert after a smash and grab robbery at a popular jewelry store in Hingham early Friday morning.

Officials said the suspect broke into the DeScenza Diamonds jewelry store on Derby Street at around 3:10 a.m. When police arrived on the scene, they found a window smashed beside the front door and damaged display cases and shelves.

Surveillance video showed a white male suspect dressed in all black clothing. He was wearing a ski mask that covered most of his face. He was carrying a hammer and had tried to pry the front door open before throwing a rock through the window.

He had fled by the time police arrived with an undisclosed amount of jewelry.
