Woburn police investigating cemetery vandalism

Posted: Updated:
WOBURN, Mass. (WHDH) - Woburn Police responded to a local cemetery Saturday morning after someone knocked over nearly 30 headstones.

The incident occurred at Woodbrook Cemetery off of Salem Street. Many people who went to the cemetery to check on loved ones' graves are outraged over the crime, some calling "disgusting."

"I'm 81 years old. When you were kids you wouldn't think of doing this," said Ruth Kitchon, who spent the day before Father's Day visiting her late husband Bill's grave site, horrified thinking his headstone could have been one of the ones toppled.

Darlene Wigton, who runs the Woburn Historical Society, said that some of the gravestones dated back to the 1800s and called the incident "heartbreaking."

Dave Merrit, who was checking in on his mother-in-law's burial site, is relieved it wasn't hit, but is just as baffled as everyone else as to who would target so many graves.

"No conscience apparently. No respect for anybody's property. Total disrespect," Merrit said.

No arrests have been made in connection with the vandalism. Anybody with information that could help with the investigation is asked to contact police.
