Somerville PD arrest man who stole donation jar

Posted: Updated:
SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WHDH) - Police said they tracked down and arrested a man seen in a surveillance video stealing a donation jar from a Somerville bar.

The video from Bull McCabe's shows a man swiping the jar with $200 inside.

"It was just sitting right there on the bar and he just grabs it, thinks nothing of it," Brian Manning, the pub’s owner, said.

The money was ticketed to go to the Jimmy Fund for cancer research.

"It's been raising money in the name of Emily who is our door guy's niece who is suffering from neuroblastoma," said Manager Dave Wells.

It happened on Monday night just before the bar was closing. Kenneth Happas was arrested Friday, just four days after the alleged theft.

In the meantime, donations have come pouring in from the community, with more than $800 donated in one day. An autographed Bruins sweater was also donated and will be raffled off with the money going to cancer research. The folks at Bull McCabe's couldn't be happier.

"We've had donations coming in, we've had people committing on Facebook to come down, we had people calling all day asking how they can donate," Wells said.
