Police seize 500 pot plants from Stoneham apartment

STONEHAM, Mass. (WHDH) -
Early Wednesday morning a mail carrier noticed a small fire inside a home in Stoneham and when police arrived they found a large pot growing operation.
Neighbors say the mailman went inside and helped a man living on the first floor to safety then fire engines started to arrive.
“She goes ‘dad, the house is on fire’ and I woke up like a shot thinking she meant my house when she meant the house out back. I came out and the fire engines were just arriving. She said she smelled marijuana so the wind must have been blowing it this way,” Dave Ridell said.
Officials said the small fire started inside the living room and while inside the apartment they discovered nearly 500 marijuana plants.
“The fire was quickly extinguished, and as they were beginning to do a search of the apartment they happened to notice the marijuana plants inside the apartment,” Stoneham Police Chief Jim Mcintyre said.
Neighbors say they can’t believe this was happening so close to their houses without their knowledge.
“I couldn’t believe it. You just don’t know what’s going on in houses around you,” Ridell said.
Police have not made any arrests yet, but they say they are searching for a 35-year-old man as a person of interest.
