Convicted murderer strangled victim with Xbox power cord

SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WHDH) - A man who killed his neighbor and then stole his Xbox and Playstation was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday.

Michael Barnett, 33, attacked Christopher Souza back in 2009, all for drug money according to police.

They say Barnett asked Souza if he could use the phone then, when Souza let him in, grabbed the Xbox power cord and wrapped it around Souza’s neck.

“I'm glad they found the murderer I’m glad the cops worked very hard on it, the DNA and all. Me and my son are happy now, he can rest in peace up in heaven,” Donna Souza, the victim’s mother, said.

Police were able to contact Sony to track the Playstation down when Barnett logged online to play a game.

“Christopher opened the door because that’s just how he is, he's kind-hearted. He didn't deserve any of this for $50,” Nancy Mederios, the victim’s aunt, said.

Barnett was an acquaintance of Souza’s, the two had grown up in the same Somerville neighborhood. Police say Barnett knew Souza was a smaller man and would make an easy victim.
