SAUGUS, Mass. (WHDH) -
A three-year-old child was killed after two cars collided in Saugus Monday night.
Saugus Police said the head-on crash happened on Walnut Street just after 10:30 p.m. A Volvo and a Ford Explorer slammed into each other.
The toddler, who was strapped into a booster seat while traveling in the Volvo, was pronounced dead at a hospital. The 43-year-old male driver refused medical treatment from emergency crews.
Daniel Leal Ortega, 40, the driver of the Ford Explorer, was rushed to Mass General Hospital where he was treated and released. He was then arrested for an outstanding warrant from 2005 for operating without a license. He has also been charged with operating without a license Monday night. Ortega has not been charged with causing the crash.
People who live near the scene of the crash say the road can be unsafe.
“It’s a two lane road with no median strip or anything, those types of road s are very dangerous,” Rob Eisenhaur said.
Police say the driver of the Volvo may have had a mechanical issue with the vehicle, and nothing has been ruled out.
Massachusetts State Police and Saugus Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
