Fitchburg burglary caught on camera

Posted: Updated:
FITCHBURG, Mass. (WHDH) - A new surveillance system captured a break-in at a Fitchburg home.

Several homes had been broken into in the neighborhood, prompting the homeowner to tighten up security, just in time.

Neighbors said the suspects stole their valuables.

"It’s been just awful. It’s scary. He had taken all my jewelry boxes and he picked out all of the gold things,” Beth Chandonait said.

Police said they believed increased drug use in the area has led to the increased break-ins.

"We don’t typically have these types of intrusions so this is very serious for us,” Fitchburg Police Sgt. Glenn Fossa said.

The newly released video showed the thief break down the door and pry his way in.

The suspect spent more than a half hour in the house before finally walking out with several purses.

Police said there have been at least six burglaries in this neighborhood in the last few weeks. Residents said there were more than two dozen when considering car break-ins.

Police are especially worried because the victims have been home in some cases, raising the chances for violence.

"We're all very concerned but we know that hopefully all of the action that’s being taken to get us back to the way the neighborhood was and the way it should be,” Bob Mack said.

Police were hopeful the clear pictures of at least one suspect would lead to the kind of tips that might clear up this crime spree.
