FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (WHDH) -
Patriots' Rob Gronkowski was among the crowd getting his head buzzed for a good cause in Foxborough on Sunday.
Thousands flocked to Gillette Stadium to watch friends and family lose their locks as part of the annual One Mission Kid's Cancer Buzz-Off. Participants raise money through sponsors and then get their heads shaved.
"It's really about the sacrifices the buzzees are making that says to the patients that they're not alone," said Ashley Haseotes, founder of One Mission.
This is the biggest fundraising event of the year for One Mission, the organization behind the Buzz Off. The money raised goes towards helping children who are battling cancer and their families. The event has brought in nearly $3 million dollars over the past five years. It's also brought in some familiar faces.
"It's something you don't want to see a kid going through, so it's putting a smile on their face and they inspire me too," said Gronkowski, who's been part of the Buzz Off for the past four years.
It's hard to believe that when the event started, about 30 people were having their heads shaved. This year, close to 1,000 participated.
"If I can give something of myself this is easy compared to what they have to go through...just keep fighting," said participant Jeff Desmarais.
