Elderly driver reverses car across street, into building

Posted: Updated:
ROCKLAND, Mass. (WHDH) - Two elderly women had just had their hair done when they backed across the street and ended up inside a local athletic store.

Witnesses say the car backed all the way across the road at a high rate of speed.

“All of a sudden I noticed it was going backwards and it just went up over the curb, very fast, and right inside the building. It disappeared inside the building, I thought it was going forward it was going so fast,” Retired Rockland Fire Chief Kevin Henderson said.

The store that the women drive into, Rockland Athletic Supplies, was closed at the time but employees were still inside.

One worker was just a few feet away,

“She thought something was coming down from upstairs on the top floor, like a compressor from my screen printing machine, then she heard someone say ‘help me, help me,” store owner John Medlin said.

No one was seriously injured but the two women inside the car were taken to the hospital for evaluations.
