NEWTON, Mass. (WHDH) - A student at newton north high school sends the wrong message while studying abroad in Beijing.

Now, he faces some consequences at home.

Henry Degroot wrote pro-democracy messages in the notebook of one of the Chinese students.

Saying:"Democracy is for cool kids” and "it’s right to rebel."

He was punished by the school in china and when he returned home newton school officials told him he could not go to prom.

Degroot says he was upset by the school's action.

“I am partially sorry in that I caused this disturbance, I caused a lot of problems for both administrations but at the same time I support what I said and I believe that I have a right to say it,” he said.

Newton North school administrators say that they understand students make mistakes but they also need to make sure they face consequences.
