Esther Earl's family says they like 'The Fault in Our Stars'

QUINCY, Mass. (WHDH) - The new feature film "The Fault in Our Stars" opened in theaters Friday and the Quincy family whose daughter it is based on says it brings them joy.

Esther Grace Earl was born in Beverly and living in France when she became ill and her parents brought her back to Boston for treatment.

“All of a sudden, she started coughing and complaining she was tired,” her mom Lori Earl said.

Esther was diagnosed with terminal cancer and was being treated at Boston Children’s Hospital when she met author John Green at a Harry Potter fan convention.

“She was hard to miss because she pulled an oxygen tank, and had a nasal cannula and kind of reddish, short hair,” her mom said.

At the time Green was writing about pediatric cancer, but he scrapped that after being inspired by Esther.

He last saw her a few weeks before she died in 2010 and he gave her a rose that the family is still holding on to.

On Monday, the family joined Green at the premier of "The Fault in Our Stars."

The love story is fiction, but Esther and the movie character were both the same age bravely fighting the same form of cancer.

“Hazel Grace was like Esther Grace and it was hard to watch the story unfold. But it was also a joy because it celebrated life and celebrated love and friendship,” Wayne Earl, Esther’s father, said.

The name Esther means “star” in Persian and since her death Esther's parents have started the This Star Won't Go Out Foundation to help families of children with terminal cancer.
