Canada couple's car struck by lightning

Posted: Updated:
UNDATED (NBC) - A couple was driving on a Canada highway when their pickup truck was struck by lightning.

"Sounded like a sonic boom. That's how loud," said Al Perry who, along with his wife Betty, were in the vehicle at the time.

"It was really loud like I don't know how loud but it was really loud," Betty said.

A still image shows the fireball that engulfed the vehicle and and shot out the back of the pickup.+

"It's an awful feeling to have. I saw our lives passing in front of my eyes," Al said.

With parts of the truck completely melted, Al believes the electrical system was fried as well. He tried to escape, but he says the doors and windows appeared locked. An officer who just happened to be driving by came to their rescue.

Al said his wife had recently suffered a stroke, so he was most worried about getting her to safety.
