DENNISPORT, Mass. (WHDH) - A woman was pulled to safety by a neighbor when a fire tore through a Dennis apartment building.

Some people inside jumped out of windows to escape the flames, but this woman was in a wheelchair and trapped.

“She’s a paraplegic, she couldn't get out, when I yanked the window to pull everything out I got her too, she came falling out,” Robert Johnson said.

Robert Johnson ran to help after waking up to hear a woman screaming from a first floor window. It was 2:30 in the morning.

“The poor girl trying to get out the window, I could see flames in the background,” Johnson said.

The fire chief says eight people were hurt, including two police officer and 1 firefighter who were treated for smoke inhalation.  He says some people were burned, others hurt when they jumped.

“Three people jumped out the windows on the second floor,” Chief Mark Dellner said.

More than a dozen people were left homeless. Johnson says he just did what he hopes anyone would do. He's just thankful he woke up when he did.

Fire officials said the fire started on the first floor and traveled up.

Two people were injured so severely they had to be taken to hospitals in Boston.
