Bedford firefighters deliver baby girl

Posted: Updated:
BEDFORD, Mass. (WHDH) -

Two firefighters in Bedford showed courage under fire when they were helping a woman in labor get to the hospital.

But the baby girl decided she didn't want to wait.

The firefighters responded Thursday morning when the woman's water broke.

They got her into the ambulance and start heading to the hospital.

They got as far as Sullivan Square in Charlestown.

"This was my first one. Not really nervous, focused on her. Make sure my training was ready to come back to me when I needed it,” Michael Sergent, the firefighter who delivered the baby, said.

The new baby girl came into the world inside that ambulance right on the side of the highway.

After the birth, they continued on to the hospital where mom and baby are said to be doing well.
