12-year-old saves friend with Heimlich

Posted: Updated:
SALT LAKE CITY (WHDH) - A 12-year-old is being called a hero after performing the Heimlich maneuver on his friend.

The two were having lunch at their school when one boy started choking.

What happened after that has made the two buddies forever friends.

Omar, a 6th grade student, and Byron, a 4th grade student. They're pretty good friends. Come lunch time they always sit at the same table. This day was no different.

"I said something funny to Byron. All of the sudden Byron gave me this sign. I started panicking and I moved my chair and I jumped over the table,” Omar said.

Byron was choking on a cucumber. He became emotional as he remembered feeling scared.

"It went down my throat. I couldn't swallow it and I started holding my throat and I stood up. I banged the table and I started holding my throat,” Byron said.

"I started hitting him on the back and that didn't work so I tried to do the Heimlich maneuver and it worked and he spit it out,” Omar said.

These two have become even closer friends. Omar learned the Heimlich maneuver after watching his mom give it to his grandfather. She was shocked when she picked up Omar from school that day.

"Oh man, I was crying. I had tears running down my face wow it was quite the moment,” Lluvia Rose said.

The school honored omar with the 'life saving award.' He said he feels pretty proud of himself.
