Man admits to trying to burn down sister's home

MIDDLEBORO, Mass. (WHDH) - An accused arsonist admitted that he tried to burn down his sister’s home in Middleboro.

Michael Blais, 60, was apparently so mad at his family over a financial issue that he thought the right move was to light the house on fire.

7News was the only station in court Thursday when Blais pleaded guilty in court. “I'm guilty as sin and that’s the way I’m going to plead,” he said.

Blais’ sister wasn’t inside the home at the time of the incident but another woman was trapped inside as the flames began to spread.

Members of the fire department said they raced to the home.

“We got there very quickly and I think we got there just in time before the house ignited completely,” Middleboro Fire Chief Bruce Gates said.

Mary Chiuppi said her brother has been under mental anguish.

“It was hard to see him like that because we have had some issues with him, he is not in his right mind right now,” Chiuppi said.

Fire officials say there was about $15,000 worth of damage to the home, mostly on the first floor.
