Soldier surprises son on sixth birthday

Posted: Updated:
A Minnesota boy turning 6 had a surprise present at his party: his father, returned home from a mission in Afghanistan.

"I kind of thought that maybe I would just walk in through the back door and be like, hey, I'm here. But she's like, no, we're going to do the present thing," said Gary Kirby.

Kirby worked clearing explosives in Afghanistan, and his first assignment when he arrived home was to surprise his son.

Derek, the birthday boy, was told the cameras came to make a video of his party to send to his dad.

Then, Derek opened the box and found his father, and the reunion was well worth the effort.
