A first time driver got a little wet this weekend after driving into a Canton pond, and no, it wasn’t a teenager.
John Costello was driving the car with his 3-month-old German shepherd Rose in the passenger seat when she got excited.
“She jumped from the side seat, basically on top of my lap and she knocked the gear shifter into drive and when the car jerked she fell over down into the gas pedal and the car just took off,” Costello said.
With the nice weather many people were out fishing on the pond, several even offered to help.
“I took one step floating next to the car and the next thing I knew the water was over my head. So I grabbed the car and started floating with the car. One of the guys jumped in and more or less calmed me down and said ‘don’t worry we’ll get the dog’ and at that point I sort of just reacted and fished her out,” Costello said.
Costello said her learned a valuable lesson, and an expensive one; the car is a total loss.
“I just need to pay more attention to her, try to keep her in the back seat and not let her in front seat,” he said.
