A man arrested for allegedly attacking a woman inside her Arlington home Sunday night was held without bail and is due in court for a dangerousness hearing on Friday.
Police said they were checking on the well-being of the woman when they found her with serious injuries. This woman was able to communicate with a friend at some point during the attack. Police didn't say how, but that friend knew something was wrong and called police. The woman told officers she had been the victim of a home invasion and sexual assault.
When officers arrived at the home, they climbed through the back window of the woman's apartment. They said they saw the suspect and he tried to run from the house.
Essie L. Billingslea, 45, of Boston, a registered Level 3 Sex Offender, led police on a foot chase. He was arrested a short time later.
Police did not know how long he was in the home but they did say why they believe he was in the neighborhood.
"We are investigating the possibility that this suspect may have had family members living in the neighborhood, which brought him to this neighborhood, but based on our investigation the suspect and the victim were not known to each other," police said.
Police allege Billingslea broke into the woman's home and beat and raped her. They say this was a random attack. Billingslea is charged with aggravated rape (subsequent offense), kidnapping, home invasion, assault and battery and armed assault in a dwelling.
“This is a heinous crime. A woman has been viciously attacked in her home by a Level 3 sex offender with a history of violence,” Chief Frederick Ryan said. “I commend my officers for capturing this dangerous felon, and we will spare no resource in providing the victim with the support and care that she needs.”
According to the sex offender registry, Billingslea was convicted of raping a child with force in 1989 and indecent assault and battery on a child under 14 years of age in 1995. That same year, he was also convicted of rape and abuse of a child.
Police don't know how long he was in prison for or when he got out.
Billingslea was arraigned on charges Monday and is due in court on June 6 for a dangerousness hearing.
