Statement on behalf of the Goodwin family

Statement released on behalf of the Goodwin family.

Yes, Lewis Katz was at the Goodwins' home yesterday. Along with more than 200 people, he attended a kickoff celebration for the Concord River Institute at the Concord, Mass. home of Richard and Doris Goodwin on the afternoon of Saturday, May 31st, 2014.

In lieu of discussing this unthinkable accident with individual reporters at this most difficult time, Doris Kearns Goodwin and her son Michael Goodwin have issued these statements:

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the seven people who lost their lives in this horrible tragedy, and to their families and loved ones," said Michael Goodwin, founder of the Concord River Institute, a school that aims to improve education around the country for students of all backgrounds and abilities. "It was an honor and a humbling experience to have Lewis Katz and his team here to support our school. Everyone who knew Lewis knew of his tireless and ongoing commitment to serve the needs of all students. The death of Lewis and his colleagues is a crushing and devastating loss."

"Lew Katz was my cherished friend of nearly 20 years. He was a force of nature. So deep was his commitment to education reform that he flew to Concord to support my son Michael's Concord River institute. Afterward we all went to dinner, where we talked at length about our shared passions for sports and journalism, politics and history. But the last thing he said to me upon leaving for the plane was that most of all what we shared was our love and pride for our children. I have lost a great friend, his family has lost a great father and grandfather, and the country has lost a great man."

Thank you for your understanding.
