BEDFORD, Mass. (WHDH) -
It didn't take long for people who live near Hanscom Field to figure out something went horribly wrong Saturday night.
Witnesses from Bedford and surrounding areas reported a loud boom after a private plane went off the runway at the small airport. They said they felt vibrations from the crash and they streamed out of their homes to investigate.
"I heard like the engine kind of accelerate and then a big crash that shook the house, the windows. The dogs kind of freaked out," said Nicole Boucher. The people who live near Hanscom hear revving engines all the time, but the loud bang was something quite out of the ordinary.
Emily Lloyd and her father went to the crash site and took several pictures of the scene, along with a short video.
"It was a huge ball of flame. You could smell the fuel," Lloyd said.
"The flames were a good 40, 50 feet up in the air and you could see the firefighters, you know, dousing it with foam and everything," said E.J. Lloyd, Emily's father. He also said that he could hear popping sounds when the firefighters attacked the burning aviation fuel and tried to extinguish it.
"It's definitely one of my nightmares living near the airport. It's definitely not something you want to see," Emily said.
The scene near the airport is still active, with trucks assisting in cleanup of aviation fuel that has gone into a local river.
