Matanov's coworkers say they're shocked by arrest

BRAINTREE, Mass. (WHDH) - Workers at the company that employed the Quincy man arrested on Friday said they were shocked that he would be in any way associated with the Boston Marathon bombing suspects.

Khairullozhon Matanov, 23, was arrested on charges that he obstructed the investigation into the bombings and the suspects, Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

Matanov was an independent contractor with Braintree Checker Cab for two or three years, according to the company. A cab is still parked at the apartment complex were he was arrested.

Witnesses only known to the jury were in the cab with Matanov when he discussed getting rid of his phones because he was concerned about the FBI.

One cab driver said he never thought in a million years that Matanov would be associated with the incident since he dressed well, was a gentleman and seemed like a nice guy.

He said he would have taken action if he had known sooner.

"I don't know, but I probably would have grabbed him out of his car and did something. You know, for all those poor people, what happened to them, you know. So yeah, I definitely would have done something," Scott said. He did not want to use his last name.

Matanov was also a member of a soccer team with friends from the Islamic Enter of New England. One man said he noticed changes in Matanov's demeanor in the weeks after the bombing.

“After the bombing when he played with us two or three times he was scared. He told me he was scared,” Ahmed Goutay said.
