Death blamed on power lines brought down in storm

Posted: Updated:
NEW MILFORD, Conn. (AP) - A man has been killed in New Milford after power lines fell onto his car during a storm that brought heavy rain and strong winds to Connecticut.

Police say Kevin Mateer's car caught fire at about 7 p.m. Tuesday after electrical wires fell onto the vehicle. Police say the 49-year-old Mateer was electrocuted as he tried to escape.

The storm caused damage across western Connecticut and several roads remained closed Wednesday morning because of fallen trees and power lines.  Several school districts also closed for the day.

About 2,600 Connecticut Light and Power customers remained without power at 1 p.m. Wednesday, including more than 1,400 in New Milford.
