WINTHROP, Mass. (WHDH) -

Crews pull a mini-van out of the water in Winthrop early Wednesday morning.

A man said he was headed toward the harbor when his brakes gave out.

“The car was sliding, I couldn’t stop it. The brakes, it wouldn’t go into park, nothing worked. I tried to open the door, the door wouldn’t open, I tried to roll down the window and that wouldn’t work at first and then it did so I put the window down. At least I felt a little safer because I knew I could get out of the car,” Bruce Alba, the driver, said.

Alba says he was cold after having to swim to shore.

He was not hurt, but did lose everything inside the vehicle.
