Deer jumps off overpass and lands on family car

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (NBC) - Heidi Conner and her 4 kids made it through an 8 hour road trip with only one stop, that was until something stopped them.

“I'm driving everything was fine then boom, and I had the deer lying next to me in my car,” she said.

A full-sized female deer slammed through the front of Conner’s windshield as she cruised at more than 70 miles an hour. She says she never saw it coming.

“I thought it came from the sky. I don't know what happened. I'm thinking ‘did somebody else hit it, did it fall off of their car and onto mine,’” she said.

Illinois state trooper Justin Novarro was first on scene.

“I spoke to a witness on scene and he observed the deer jump off Illinois 72 onto I-90 westbound,” Novarro said.

The only eye witness told police he saw the deer jump or fall from this over pass.

And despite the impact, Conner maneuvered the van - through three lanes of traffic to get to safety.

“If it had been one inch to the left, it would have been dead center; I wouldn't have been able to control the car. One inch to the right it would have killed my son,” she said,

The kids weren't hurt at all and doctors say Conner only has a sore shoulder and a few bumps and bruises.
