Fall River, Mass. (WHDH) -
Carlos Ortiz pleaded not guilty to an upgraded charged of first-degree murder for the death of Odin Lloyd.
Ortiz and Earnest Wallace were both initially charged with helping Aaron Hernandez after he killed Lloyd in June 2013, but in April a Grand Jury indicted the two men on murder charges.
“They've just changed it to joint venture. I think somehow they believe that makes it easier to prove their case,” Ortiz’s attorney John Connors said.
A murder weapon used to kill Lloyd was never recovered.
Ortiz’s attorney said his client was just along for the ride with Hernandez the night of Lloyd’s death.
“Now he faces the most serious charges he could possibly face. Somebody who looked up to Aaron Hernandez as a hero; just like everyone in Bristol, Conn. did, and this is the situation he is in at this point,” Connors said.
