Jared Remy pleads guilty, gets life sentence without parole

WOBURN, Mass. (WHDH) -

Jared Remy changed is plea in court Tuesday and admitted to murdering his girlfriend Jennifer Martel.

It was in Woburn Superior Court when Remy stood in front of a judge and admitted that he had killed his girlfriend, the mother of his 4-year-old daughter.

After answering a series of questions before the judge accepted his changed plea, the 35-year-old told the judge he has been on medication for three or four years for treatment of depression.

“I’m here today not for a deal but to take responsibility for what I’ve done. I would like you to know that I always told Jenn she could leave but do not threaten me with my daughter. That night Jenn had a knife in her hand and threatened me with my daughter so I killed her,” Remy said.

In a statement Remy said he wanted sole responsibility for the crime and that his family, including Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy, have no fault.

“My family did everything they could to help Jenn and hope she had a good life. Jenn always said that my family was her real family. They both loved each other, and I’m the bad apple. If you ask my family they'd rather have me dead than her,” Jared Remy said.

A spokesman for Jennifer Martel’s parents told the judge the murder has been a living nightmare for them.

“Our lives will never be the same again. Even listening to music is different, songs remind us of Jennifer. It doesn't seem real. It's a nightmare,” Alec Zadek, the Martel family spokesman, said.

Jared Remy was taken from the courthouse to M.C.I. Cedar Junction in Walpole where he will spend the rest of his life behind bars without the possibility of parole.
